Acrylic Paint Smooshing Tutorial

This tutorial is a quick easy technique that creates a background with depth and interest.  Its also a great way to use up extra paint.

Ingredients
Non Stick Craft Mat or other non stick sheet
Acrylic paint - I used some craft acrylic paint I got in a kit
Substrate - I used a shipping tag
Spray bottle with water

Step 1 On a non-stick sheet spread several color of acrylic paint.  For a softer look spray water into the paint.

2. Press the substrate into the paint.  Spraying water on the tag prior to putting the tag into the paint will create a softer look.  If you spray the tag after it has paint on it you will be a very running blended look.

A tag that had water sprayed on it prior to being smooshed into the paint

 3.  Repeat on the same tag until you have the coverage you desire.  Let dry.

This tag was not sprayed with water so the lines are not as soft.

One Little Tag Craft Challenge #112

Today the musical artist Prince died.  His music has been part of the soundtrack of my life.  As a teenager I was into alternative music and his fusion of rock, R&B, jazz and synthesized music was amazing.  The song Starfish and Coffee was sort of an anthem for me.  The idea of a young girl who did not fit in with everyone else and was teased for it resounded with the experience I had in school.  This tag was made in his honor.

Spread several colors of acrylic paint on a non stick craft sheet.  Mist with water. Smoosh manila tag into the paint, making sure to cover the entire tag.  Let it dry.  Stamp script stamp (A Stamp in the Hand) over the acrylic paint using Archival Ink Jet Black.  Stamp quote on handmade paper with the same ink.  Tear out each word individually.  Spray a puddle of Dylusions Spray in Crushed Grape on a non stick craft sheet.  Spray stamped pieces of paper with quote on it and then dip edges in the purple puddle.  Let dry.  Adhere to tag.

One Little Tag Craft Challenge #77

This quote is something a friend of mine would say every year during the St. Patrick's Day Parade in New Orleans.  It felt like an appropriate celebration for the day.

Gesso was applied to a manila tag in a haphazard way so that not the entire tag was covered.  For the acrylic paint smooshing technique, green and blue acrylic paint were applied to a non stick craft mat and then sprayed with water.  The tag was swiped through the wet paint to apply to the tag creating a mottled application.  Once dried, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in gold was applied through a Stencil Girl Stencil.  Sentiment was stamped onto handmade paper with Archival Ink Jet Black then sprayed with the Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in gold so that it would match.  Phrase was torn out of paper and applied to tag.
