Painted Circles Tutorial

I learned this technique from Cat Hand's Mixed Media Morsels.  Here is the YouTube video.  I love this technique for background paper because I love love love circles, its a good way to use up extra acrylic paint, it used supplies I have and it is a simple easy technique that results in eye catching papers.

When I do this I usually do several pages at once.  In this session I made seven sheets.

Ingredients
Paper substrate - I used vintage book text from a French textbook
Acrylic Paint - I used cheap acrylic paint that came in a kit.
Q-Tips
White Acrylic Paint - I used some in a fine liner bottle but you could use a paint pen or a paint brush.
Black Acrylic Paint
Circle makers - I used a soda bottle cap and an empty toilet paper roll
Heat Tool or patience

 Steps

1.  Using a Q-tip and acrylic paint, paint open circles and curved lines similar to the let C on a vintage paper. Let dry or use a heat tool to dry before moving on to the next color.  I work on several pieces at once so the first color is dry by the time I am ready to move onto the next one so I do not usually use a heat gun.

2.  With another Q-Tip and another color of acrylic paint, paint around the around the original marks.  It helps if you do quick little swipes.  Let dry or use a heat tool to dry before moving on to the next color.  Don't worry about not having completed circles, as you add more colors they fill out.

3.  Repeat with several more colors.  I used pink as my base color then orange, blue and green.

4.  With white acrylic paint, add highlights.  Let dry or use a heat tool to dry before moving on.

5.  With two round objects and black acrylic paint, stamp circles around the painted circles.  Let dry or use a heat tool to dry before moving on.

I would never use the paint to actually paint with because it is so transparent but for this technique it was great.  It also came in this little tubs of paint so it was perfect to traveling to an art making event.

Decorative Paper Mosaic Tutorial

This is a technique I have been doing for years.  Recently Cat Hand from Mixed Media Morsels did a video on it https://youtu.be/8myU_lw9DEA

Ingredients
Substrate - I used a shipping tag
Decorative paper - In this tutorial I used decorative scrapbook paper but you could use magazine pages, old paintings, gelli prints, or wrapping paper.
Scissors
Paper trimmer - optional
Adhesive - A wet adhesive works the best.  I used soft gel medium in matte
Patience - If you use a heat gun on this technique to heat up the drying time you run the risk of it bubbling so I suggest just letting it dry on its own.

Steps
1. Cut up several different pieces of paper into strips with scissors or a paper trimer

2.  Cut up the strips of paper into triangles.  I keep the triangles in piles separated by colors.

3.  Color your substrate.  I used a tag I was experimenting with stencils and watercolor but if you paint it in solid color such as white or black with took like a more traditional stone mosaic.

4.  Using the wet adhesive adhere the paper triangle to the substrate.  Make sure to leave space between each piece to create the mosaic look.

5.  Seal with the wet adhesive and let it dry.

One Little Tag Challenge #149

Paint a manila tag with purple acrylic paint, before dry stamp sequin waste stamp (Stampinton) in paint to lift off some of the paint.  Let dry.  Adhere scraps from the Mixed Media Wonky piece of text paper to tag.  With black acrylic stamp the two butterfly images (Rubber Stamp Concept).  Let dry.  Outline the images with a white Moltow Paint Pen.

Tip when using a marker of any type over acrylic paint or ink, make sure it is very very very dry.  If not then the pen will skip and get clogged.  I usually wait at least 24 hours.

One Little Tag Craft Challenge #94

The main image was created from a prompt of Cat Held's Mixed Media Morsels and inspired by a friend, Laurelle. Here is the video of Cat Held demoing the technique.  It is surprisingly easy but makes some dramatic paper.  I made about 5 pages of it in one setting.  I am sure it will show up in more of my tags.

Color a manila Tag with with metallic watercolor crayons.  Using a Tim Stencil and a baby wipe rub away the design creating a ghost image.  Create background text paper using the Mixed Media Morsel painted circle technique.  Using a Dylusions mask, cut out image of female from the created paper.  Adhere to tag. Outline with dashes using an india ink marker. Adhere a strip of the created paper along the edge.  Adhere the line from a book.  The line is "She thought of the love in the heathen woman's breast, from an Andersen's Fairy Tale.
